[comp.unix.xenix] Looking for an Editor for SCO Unix 3.2

andrew@yunexus.UUCP (Andrew Kleiman) (05/24/90)

To All SCO Unix people:

Does anyone know of a better editor for SCO Unix 3.2 then vi. I know of
two other editors, Emacs and Jove. Has anyone installed it successfully on
SCO Unix 3.2 ? Also does anyone know where I can get it.

Has anyone tried WordPerfect 5.0 for Unix ?

I have ftp or modem access.

Please responed via email or this news group.

Thanks in Advance

Andrew Kleiman

I have successfully compiled emacs version 18.55 under SCO Unix 3.2
and it is working fine. The executables and the files they use take
about 4 Mb of disk space, so we have to find out a way to distribute
the binaries to you, if you are interested in getting them. It may
be possible for me to send the compressed tar package to funic.funet.fi
but I'm not sure. Please contact me via email or this group if you
are interested.

The "best editor" is a function of the application and one's
preferences and experience. The best approach is to try out
different editors and then ask about a *nix flavor of that program.

I use vi for most of my *nix editing, and some Emacs variants for
the rest. I also have a BSD source to Teco just in case I get a
nostalgia attack.

You must mean 'more friendly to the uninitiated user'
Either that or you don't know vi.

WordPerfect says their SCO Unix version won't be out until near the end
of the year.

The Xenix distribution actually runs fine on Unix, the problem is in
all the fancy(stupid) things WordPerfect tries to do with printing.
The Xenix distribution would go and replace your
/usr/spool/lp/interface/whatever files with a WP 'filter' script which
would determine if a file sent to the spooler was a WordPerfect file
or not, then treat it different if was a WP file.

The Unix directory structures under /usr/spool/lp are not even the
same as the Xenix ones. I'd say WordPerfect wasn't too smart when
they thought they'd get fancy with their 'print server'.
