After enjoying the convenience of Vopt, SD, Compress and similar disk optimizing systems, I find the lack of same frustrating for my Xenix system. I understand that there are a few optimizing systems out there, and my bbs could certainly use one - can anyone suggest one that has a good record for reliability? I'd like to be able to optimize the entire system on a daily basis, to improve disk i/o...

So run packdisk. It's been posted to the net a number of times. Like any disk diddler, if the system breaks while you do it, you are in a (potential) world of trouble. I have backed up and packed my news partition from time to time, but you can get a big improvement by unmounting the filesystem and running fsck with the -s option. That orders the freelist.
