A friend of mine is looking for a software package for a personal computer that teaches Arabic, or will facilitate the teaching of Arabic (i.e., that could provide drills or something like that). Someone is considering giving a grant to her school to purchase such a system and he (the potential donor) seems to want or prefer three things (all of which may be mutually exclusive): 1) It should run on an IBM PC (this is not at all necessary). 2) It should recognize Arabic as more than just visual patterns. I think by this she means that it should be able to recognize words, misspellings, etc. 3) It should allow "handwriting" (and recognition) of Arabic with a something like a light pen. My understanding is that (2) above is the most important. the closest I've been able to come is a "MacWrite" with an Arabic keyboard. Can anyone be of any further assistance? Thanks in advance. - Gil Neiger gil@svax.cs.cornell.edu
