Hi. I am having problems with my parent's printer. It is an Epson FX80 purchased when the computer system was bought (in January 1983). The printer does not print as "dark" as it used to. Obviously I have purchased and replaced the ribbon. The ribbon needs to be replaced more frequently because of the light print problem. It seems to me that it is not baring down as hard on the paper as it used to. Do you have any idea what the problem could be? Could the head be going bad? Bout what does it cost to replace one? Can I do it myself? Also, I would like to update this printer with the Epson upgrade kit ($79.95) from Dots-Perfect in Glendora CA. Has anybody done the same the same upgrade to their Epson printer? Have you gotten satisfactory results? Please respond directly to me. I worked at a computer store that carried Epson printers. The easy part is, the printheads used to run about fifty to sixty dollars. You can easily install them yourself. Don't pay someone else to. I could { talk you throught it if you are particularly nonmechanical. Now for the other question. I've never heard of a printhead going bad making the print get light. I suppose it could, but generally they throw a pin or completely burn up. Anybody else have any ideas. All the customers I talked to loved the upgrade, we sold quite a few.
