In the absence of any obviously relevant newsgroup for this subject I am posting this to comp.misc and news.groups in the hope of someone either responding or suggesting a more appropriate newsgroup for this subject. Matrix Management was a hot management topic in the 1960's and 70'. I am studying for an MBA. One of my assignments is to look at Matrix Management. There must be some people on the network who are working within Matrix organisations or have done so in the past. What do you think of it? I'd like to hear about the organisations that had a lot of Matrix publicity 10 to 15 years ago. I have in mind such companies such as Dow, Hughes, Rockwell, TRW etc. Are you still using Matrix? If not was it a conscious decision to abandon it or did it just slip away quietly? Thanks in advance. -- Regards, Gareth Phillips. <dgp@tcom.stc.co.uk> ...seismo!mcvax!ukc!stc!dgp

Martin Marietta claimed to use matrix management a few years ago when I worked there. Essentially, for the most part the project management dominated everything. The "home-shop" managers were a quite anemic and powerless and spent most of their time listening (but not being able to do anything about) job gripes and keeping tracket of personnel records for their employees. There really was a third managment, a network of project leaders who really did the work of deciding the professionals path from project to project. I was always fond of the term "Mushroom Managemnt: "Keep 'em in the dark and feed them shit and watch 'em grow. -Ron
