[well, I found it amusing] In the April 23, 1987 edition of _Machine_Design_, the cover story is Computerized Exercise Equipment. "The Puma RS Computer shoe interfaces with Apple IIe or Commodore 64 computers. The external heel counter contains a circuit board that records the runner's strides and run time...." "Adidas Micropacer gives running distance, time, average speed and calorie consumption of the last workout, as well as cumulative distance and run time. A sensor under the left toe receives an impulse when the runner pushes off; the impulse is transmitted to the computer unit on top of the shoe..." "Bally Fitness and Bally Midway designed the Liferower to make exercise in to a video game. It puts the user into a race with the computer, and the video screen displays stroke rates, position, distance, time, and calories burned. The rower also gives advice from a 'coach'".
