[comp.misc] Tracking Al Einstein - software suggestions anyone?

einstein@bucsb.UUCP (11/02/87)

Here at the Einstein Papers Project we've got a rather interesting
problem. We have an index of all the "known" correspondence of a
Albert Einstein fellow, known as Al to his friends :). We also
have copies of the material for research for the series of books being
produced in cooperation with Princeton University Press.

Since the index contains the dates (or approximate dates) and origins of
the material we'd like to create a program that would allow us to build
a timeline based on this material with several different headings for
personal correspondence, major papers, major life events and world
happenings. This would also allow us to resolve conflicting information
very easily.

Does anyone have suggestions for a software package that might be suitable
for this kind of work. Or if not a commercial package, any good ideas
for implementing such a timeline. We would prefer the software to run
on our SUNs and produce postscript printer output but we have IBM PCs
and could probably come up with funds to rent time on other machines if
it was worthwhile.... The database is currently a mix of rBASE V and being
ported into RTI Ingres.

thanks in advance,

David
