[comp.misc] Meaning of :-) and :-<

Subject: What do those :-) and :-< things mean, anyhow?

Netter-Folk: I thought that the enclosed notes posted on Prime Computer
Inc.'s internal Bulletin Board might amuse more than just ourselves. I will
leave some of the original Prime bulletin-board item numbers, subjects, and
authors, to add to the flavor of the adoption curve of this idea within this
community... I know you are already familiar with the earlier :-)
incarnations of the smileyface, but you may like some of the later variations
on this theme!

As ever, "Your Emotions May Vary" depending on your screen font, ASCII
character set equivalences, and YOUR receptivity...

[FUN] What do those :-) and :-< things mean, anyhow?

Some background on the weird :-) constructions I used in some of my previous
notes, for the curious:

These are "shorthand expression markings" which seem to be in current vogue on
the nationwide computer BBoards. Hint: Look at them sideways!

:-) means (smile), same for 8-) but with wider-open "eyes"
;-) means (smile) plus (wink)
:-< or :-( mean (sad face)

... and my own extensions ...

:-} means (wry grin)
:-{ means (sarcastic displeasure)

Current usage has it as permissible to balance an open parenthesis with a
"smiling close parenthesis" (despite the mixed semantics bound to amuse any
LISPer ;-).

I just can't wait to see all the creative smiley-faces and other body language
that will undoubtedly be posted in response to this.

B-) a smileyface with glasses

:^) making for a more noticeable nose

... and my own rather more fanciful extensions ...

:~| an ex-prizefighter with a cauliflower nose?

Depending on the screen or printer font used, 8-) can have asymmetrical eye
sizes, perhaps an unintended effect of this shorthand...

The totem pole posted earlier is unfair to APL.

Why pick on C, when there's APL?

(Insert funny face made of APL character set here: )

Now take that funny face, and try to figure out what it does, as
       an APL one-liner.

In a similar vein, a totally different subject:

{:+ Yes, I _do_ play the oboe. Why do you ask?

o<8^)> We glyph you a merry Christmas...

Cheers,

Please, not again. The big list of smileys has been posted three or four times
in the last two weeks on rec.humor. Just search for Subject: smiley. There
are scores of constructions in the list, including "submitter is an elephant".
Be seing you...

No! Please, not again! Not another round of funny faces.

Please folks, we've all seen all the funny faces before, we don't need
to post them again (this seems to crop up a couple of times a year, along
with lightbulb jokes).

Aaargh!! No! Please! This subject has already been worked to death in
rec.humor, with everybody and his dog posting their 157 favorite smiley
faces.
