[comp.misc] Sony NWS Series and Kowin Three

reggie@pdn.UUCP (George W. Leach) (12/16/87)

Has anyone heard anything concerning the Sony NWS Series of UNIX-based
workstations? The only information that I have seen on this series of machines
is the article in the August, 1987 issue of UNIX/WORLD. Has Sony decided on
a pricing strategy? Are there international trade restrictions holding things
up? Or is the product available in the US? Any information would be accepted.

The Kowin Three is covered in an article in the December, 1987 issue of
UNIX/WORLD. The system is advertised as costing $1900 per user. Of course,
the price of the file server was never mentioned in the the article, but still
this does look promising as competition against the AT clone market for UNIX.
Does anyone have any experience with these machines? Although the Kowin Three
is billed as an Office Automation System, it is based on the MC68020 and runs
UNIX System V Release 3. At such a low cost it would seem to be a cheap
alternative to a Sun, Apollo, HP, or DEC workstation in a network environment.
The only problem is that the networking ports sound like they will only work
with Kowin equipment (sigh). It would have really been nice had an ethernet
interface been provided. Oh well, what do you want for that price!
