I did exactly this and have no complaints (it satisfies my clients).
I use Microport Unix Sys V/AT on a clone with some other stuff,
the breakdown goes like this:

AT clone:               $1,400   (This was a year ago)
3 Meg o'memory            $600	
80 Megs of hard drive     $800
EGA  Monitor              $500
Cartridge Tape            $750
9 Track Tape            $3,500
Nec Printer             $1,000
Uport Unix/Merge          $700
                       =======
                        $9,250

I don't know what a Vax costs, but I'm sure it's much more.  I can
read from one tape drive -> process -> write to other tape drive
which makes it possible to handle larger files than I have free
disk space for.
