[comp.misc] What Ever Happended to NEXT, Inc.?

ward@cfa.harvard.EDU (Steve Ward) (06/17/88)

Whatever happened to NEXT, Inc., the startup founded by the ex-Apple
founder Jobs, of Jobs and Wozniak (similar to Martin and Lewis) fame?

News of NEXT has faded from the front pages and all I remember is that
announcements and deadlines passed by or were redefined while nothing
ever hit the marketplace.

Did NEXT fold? Are they still going strong? Any rumors as to what
they will produce? The original pronouncements were for the "NEXT"
generation of workstations for the personal/professional/educational
markets.

jbn@glacier.STANFORD.EDU (John B. Nagle) (06/17/88)

NEXT is still making Real Soon Now announcements and is still
very secretive about their intentions. But this has now been going on
for long enough that they are called "NEXT Month" here in Silicon
Valley. But they're still operating; there are cars in the parking
lot.

Last I heard, they are headquartered in Palo Alto California, right
across the street from HP labs, and were hiring a few weeks ago. I
presume that means they're heading for an intro.

("Does this mean there will be overtime right up until the layoffs?")

The current (June 20) issue of TIME has a full-page article on NeXT.
In a nutshell, the product, by all accounts great, has been delayed for
several weeks again. Interesting reading.
