This is not for myself (so terminology might be wrong): My dad gives a talk at a conference on factory transport installations. He wants to hold his talk about the current possibilities of wireless communications between (say) a terminal on a conveyor and a central computer system. Another application is in a shop where you can use a barcode scanner for inventory control. Then have the scanner sending it's results to a main computer. The computer could give the operator directions via the scanner, all without having to drag along hundreds of meters wire :-). This type of communication is normally done using infra-red or radio transmission. He knows enough about the managerial side of the business but less on the technical side. So he is seeking information on the following subjects: . Literature on the subject. . When you have multiple senders, what kind of protocol is used? (Something like CSMA/CD?) . What frequencies are used for radio transmission? . What modulation techniques are used for infra-red and radio transmission? . When do you choose infra-red and when radio? One is clear: when a transmission path is unobstructed, you can use infra-red, but when using a lot of transmitters you need a lot of receivers. . Does anybody have experience with applications, what kind of installations, etc... Thanks in advance, when we get enough responses I will summarize to the net.
