Does this sound reasonable as an enhancement to uucico? In L-devices, add a new type of connection: PROG. This means that this entry represents a line that must be accessed through a program. The format would be PROG label name arg [prot] 'label' is what L.sys would refer to this entry with. 'name' is the name of the program. 'arg' is an arg to pass the program, and 'prot' is the protocol to use. When uucico finds a PROG entry, it would fork off the specified prog with the specified argument. It is to assume that this will connect to something running uucico, and that it may communicate over standard input and output. I recently needed something like this for use over Ethernet. Without this I needed some horrible kludge involving ptys' and rlogin....ugh! Well, is this reasonable? -- Duty Now for the Future Tim Smith ihnp4!wlbr!callan!tim or ihnp4!cithep!tim

YES! The proposed addition to the L-devices would solve a lot of problems, such as new modems, strange dial out proceedures and interesting net access methods. I would really like to see such a thing become reality. (some of us don't have uucp source) harvard!gcc-opus!brad

<who who cp?> Along the same lines, I would like for uucp to be able to take input from stdin as well as files. On one of our small systems I would very much like to be able to do something like cd / tar cf - . | uucp - bigsys!~backups over a hardwire connection. (ie, no problem cranking up a successful uucico at any time). I haven't quite figured out how this could be done, given the fact that uucp and uucico are different programs, but anything with the same effect would be nice. I like it, I like it. You could require the program to send SIGHUP's to uucico if the connection terminated (and perhaps vice versa). -- Geoff Kuenning First Systems Corporation ...!ihnp4!trwrb!desint!geoff
