[comp.misc] BITNET --> UUCP mail... suggestions?

tbetz@dasys1.UUCP (Tom Betz) (09/16/88)

A friend of mine at Harvey Mudd (MGLASSMAN@HMCVAX.BITNET) has told me
he's receiving my mail (tbetz@dasys1.UUCP) but is unable to reply...
everything he sends me just gets bounced. Can anyone give him (or me)
suggestions on ! paths that are more likely to be successful that the reverse
of the path he's getting from me? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sending mail from UUCP sites to Bitnet sites, you have to go through a
UUCP backbone site (I don't know which one you are using), e.g. uunet.uu.net,
or cunyvm.cuny.edu which isn't a backbone site (I think) but is on bitnet.

Similarily, sending mail the other way round, you have to bounce it off a
machine which knows another machine on UUCPnet. Since I am not informed
about the East Coast links, you may just try the following:

	user%host.bitnet@backbone.uucp
from dasys1.uucp, where "backbone" stands for the backbone
site you use to bounce off your mail.

	user%host.uucp%uunet.uu.net@cunyvm.bitnet
from Bitnet sites. CUNYVM should know about uunet.uu.net
which in turn knows about the UUCP sites. Now, I have no idea
how addresses from Bitnet hosts look like, but this address
should work if you transform it suitably. Just replying may
not work is the host is just getting a return path without
the bitnet <=> uucp gateway. The UUCP person may include a
valid Reply-To field in the messages, that should help.

Well, this is for this particular case, so you may have to modify that
for other areas.

Good luck,

The uucp-bitnet gateway I know of is psuvax1 (Penn State). You might
try having him send mail to dasys1!tbetz@psuvax1 or some such
variation. Or, try the UUCP->arpa gateways which are harvard, rutgers,
ucbvax, uunet, and talcott.
