[comp.misc] Shrinking pictures

I have a need to display a picture on an ASCII terminal.  I have that
picture in some bitmapped format and need to reduce it considerably since
that picture is aimed at a graphics oriented terminal.  Is there an easy
way to accomplish this.  Can I blindly extract say every tenth pixel or do
I need to analyze that pixel's environment?  Where can I find algorithms
to do this efficiently?
