[comp.misc] Smithsonian Air & Space Display

mjt@super.ORG (Michael J. Tighe) (03/10/89)

I was in DC today and decided to stop by the Smithsonian's Air & Space
Museum to see what was new since I have not been in there in a while.
In the main lobby they have Voyager, along with a big display for it.

They are also working on a showcase called Computers in Aviation, or
something similar. It is dedicated to the role computers played in
aviation. Although the display was roped off, you could see inside as
they were working. I took a peek inside and saw a Cray-1 in there. I
imagine it is a mockup, not the real thing. It was on old one, had
those ugly colors (brown/red).

I also found a diagram of the display and according to it they will
have the X-29 in there, as well as another plane, which I could not
identify (it had a delta wing like and F-16 XL, but a canard (sp?)
like the Rafael fighter). They also are going to have displays about
VLSI, wind tunnels, etc. It looked interesting.

So if you are planning on visiting DC, you may want to see this. They
expect it to be open in May 1989.
