[comp.misc] Telebit Modem help

raoul@eplunix.UUCP (Otero) (03/21/89)

I have been having trouble connecting up a Telebit Trailblazer at work:
terminal line characteristics and modem behavior is new to me, so
I wonder if some people out there might be able to help. It doesn't
help that the Trailblazer has more blinkenlightzen than you can shake
a stick at, either!

Connected to a 9600baud terminal line on our VAX11/750 and a phone:
I tried to dial in to this from our dial-out line, and either the
call failed or it connected at 1200 baud and started spitting back
garbage, then froze. The specs say it needs a 9600 baud, eight data bits,
no parity bit, one stop bit connection. Is this the standard connection
on a VAX? It matches as near as I can tell by using "stty everything",
but I'm not completely certain.

Connected to a h19 terminal and a phone: The modem responds with diagnostic
commands correctly and loads the factory default values properly. When
I use this to try and call our other dial-in or other dial-ins, it calls,
the other phone answers, and I get a "CONNECT 1200" message. Then it
either prints a few characters of the login prompt, then hangs,
or just hangs period. Very frustrating behavior either way.

Is there some factory setting on this machine that I have to adjust?
The machine has so many registers, it's almost completely configurable.
Unfortunately, it's like trying to use a bulldozer as a hammer. I don't
*need* that much ability! But it's here, my boss wants to use it for
13kbaud connection with the other one we've got, so I'm playing with it.

Any helpful hints or questions can be emailed to raoul@athena.mit.edu,
or you can try to reply to this address. Be warned, the eplunix
address is sometims flaky: athena is more certain, and probably faster.
Thanx!
