Unfortunately there is no longer one tar format. On 4.3 BSD man 5 tar will give you details of the format. GNU tar documentation gives a detailed description of the format(s).

If you have a UNIX-like machine, try man 5 tar from the shell. Then make a few small tar files and use 'od' to look at them. If you don't have a UNIX machine, I believe I can dig up a PD version of tar from someplace. (When my hard drive comes in, I'll be much better organized with this stuff.... <sigh>). - Darren
