This conversation about su has me wondering: What do people usually use su for? I see two commonly used functions here: 1) administrative and maintenance functions (e.g. su news; ...) for required access privileges, and 2) for someone else to do/show something (e.g. su - joe; ...; EOT). It seems to me that su could be smart enough to distinguish between these two uses (since it already has separate command sequences which are documented).
