There once existed a public access Unix machine known as unirot, aka `The Soup Kitchen'. Unirot was officially a Unipress-Emacs demo machine, located in New Jersey (also closely related with Rutgers, as I recall). Over a year ago it shut down, allegedly temporarily, while awaiting installation of new phone lines. If anyone out there knows of The Soup Kitchen, and has any info concerning its current state, I'd appreciate hearing from you. -- Dave Hammond daveh@marob.masa.com

>There once existed a public access Unix machine known as unirot, >aka `The Soup Kitchen'. Well, close. Unirot was The Soup Kitchen's electronic persona. It was, and still is (I'm sitting in it right now) more than just a computer. In fact, the hardware pile here has expanded somewhat, and we're now listed in the Internet domain system as "soup.org". Mama Liz is still a frequent contributor to netnews, both as liz@mama.soup.org and as sommers@pilot.njin.net. > Unirot was officially a Unipress-Emacs demo machine, >located in New Jersey (also closely related with Rutgers, as I recall). Yup, it was. The ties to Rutgers are still strong, and just as unofficial as always. Both Ron and I are on the computer center staff there, and Unipress still has a number of Rutgers Comp. Sci. undergrads on the part-time payroll. >Over a year ago it shut down, allegedly temporarily, while awaiting >installation of new phone lines. Among other things, like a new brain. Unirot is dead, but may arise at some future time should a new CPU magically appear. Fear not, such things actually do happen around here. >If anyone out there knows of The Soup Kitchen, and has any info concerning >its current state, I'd appreciate hearing from you.
