[comp.misc] US Geological Survey Maps

I'm wondering what the copyright & distribution status of US geological
survey maps (on Database) and NOAA/coast guard navigational charts (on
database) is.

Since these items were developed by the Government, are they considered
in the public domain? Can they be freely distributed by anyone?

Assuming these things can be distributed, is there anyplace I could FTP
one of these maps from, just to get a sample of how the data is organized?

Any information would be appreciated.

The maps are in the public domain. If the government supplied the
data base, the data base should be in the public domain as well. If
a private company generated a data base based on the maps, I suspect
the data base will be copyrighted.

I would very much like access to such a data base as well.
