I'm looking for a system to replace an aging Vax-11/750. The general basic requirement are: Runs Unix, preferably something fairly close to BSD. Has good IP networking support, including NFS and nameserver. Has on the order of 5 times the CPU speed of a 750. Has on the order of 8 Mbytes of main memory. Has on the order of 1 Gbyte of disk space. Dec has some moderately interesting machines which fit this general outline in their new RISC machines. Sun has some stuff too. What I'm looking for are suggestions, and experiences about products from other vendors. I am aware of companies such as Sequent, and MIPS, but don't know much about their machines; comments from people who have them would be appreciated. I've heard about the tahoe machines, but don't know who makes them, or much about them at all; If you have one of those, I'd like to hear from you. If you have some other machine which I havn't mentioned but falls into the broad guidelines above, I'd like to hear about that too. Proposals from vendors would be welcomed. -- Roy Smith, Public Health Research Institute 455 First Avenue, New York, NY 10016 {att,philabs,cmcl2,rutgers,hombre}!phri!roy -or- roy@alanine.phri.nyu.edu "The connector is the network"
