] How do you say the following terms:
]
] GNU = "new" like the antelope relative
] kludge = long u, i.e. I do not rhyme it with sludge or fudge
(BTW, my cat is named Kludge)
] char = as the first syllable of character, does not rhyme
with star, is not an automobile, nor is it burned
] soc.misc = 3 words - soash dot miss(k)
] troff = tee roff (roff rhymes with off)
] nroff = en roff
] TeX = "Hey there Tex, how's your cows doing?"
] LaTeX = the stuff most condoms are made of

Assuming you are taking a poll of some sort...
I would say your address as
two zero eight seven four at unix dot see eye ess dot pitt dot edu
(edu = first syllable of education)

The above are the way _I_ say things, the way most people _I_ know say
things...your milage may differ.

Chapter one of "The TeX Book" is devoted to how to pronounce
"TeX". It should rhyme with Bleeechh and you're monitor should become
slightly moist.

Chapter one of "The LaTeX book" says that you can do it anyway
you want... except "L A TeX" (I guess he doesn't want to to look like
L. A. Law :) ) Lah Teeechh, Lay Teeechh, Latex (as in the paint) are
all fine.

I've been told that when lecturing about LaTeX, Lamport is known to
have used the three "proper" ways randomly and with about 1/3
distribution each.

Wrong. Read it again. It is "blecchhh", that looks different to me.
Anyway, it is only an approximation to what Knuth means, i.e. the
sound we represent as "j".

Every now and then I wonder if there should be a newsgroup called
	rec.arts.pronounce
or something, for people to discuss how to pronounce # or GNU or whatever.

Is there ever a time when this discussion is not active in at least one
newsgroup?

0.75 :-)
