Ok, here's one from the cheap seats: Here in the dorms at Purdue, we have dov boxes (Data Over Voice: a 9600 bps modem which uses the telephone line for serial transmissions without disturbing the human telephone user) to allow us to access several of the networks on campus. They work exceptionally well. In the best of all possible worlds, though, this system could be used for NFS, possibly as a SLIP node. This particular dov box (Gandalf DOV 640) samples at 64Kbps, so it wouldn't be *too* pathetic for use by mere students :-) Anyway, on to the questions. (1) Does anyone else on the planet use Gandalf dov boxes? Do you use them as anything other than hayes-like modems? (2) Anyone have any thoughts on the use of this beast in a network? With telnet? PC-NFS? (3) I hear that someone is actually writing a 64Kbps SLIP program for the Gandalf. Any good rumors to pass around? Tips for writing one myself? Thanks, Steve Wootton stevew@{en,ei,el}.ecn.purdue.edu stevew@pur-ee.uucp stevew%ecn.purdue.edu@purccvm.bitnet
