[comp.misc] Formatting 3.5" -> 1.44Meg

kaminski@skybridge.scl.cwru.edu (Steve Kaminski) (12/18/89)

I read some time ago that someone thought that PCTools program "PCFormat"
would format DD 3.5" disks to 1.44Meg. I tried it, and get a "Bad Address
Mark." I am using the current version (5.5) of PCTools, and I was just
wondering if anyone has had success with this.

I know, I know, I SHOULD buy 1.44Meg disks for my data's security, but don't
flame me nor lecture me. I've heard all that, and I appreciate the warnings.

Thanks for any help.

First you have to fool the drive into thinking it has an HD diskette...
Look at an HD and a DD side-by-side, and you'll notice a small hole in
the back of the HD, near one (outside) corner. Duplicate that hole in
the DD and you'll have better success. Of course, you already know the
risks, etc, etc, etc........
