We currently are bringing up 2.9bsd on our 70 and I am undecided whether to install delivermail or sendmail. I gather that delivermail is older and smaller than sendmail which also implies that sendmail is more powerful. The real question is then whether delivermail is "good enough" or if sendmail is needed. All our external links are via uucp. I will summarize if there is enought to warrant. A HELPFUL HINT FROM HELOISE In the course of converting our Vax to 4.2BSD (from 4.1BSD) I noticed that many local mailers and applications programs were formatting mail (massaged or computer generated) and attempting to pipe into /etc/delivermail. Not wanting to restore an antique program merely to keep these programs happy I noticed that sendmail is roughly downwardly compatible with delivermail. Just: 'ln -s /usr/lib/sendmail /etc/delivermail'. Sendmail can be very powerful once you get into the syntax but it does use a lot of cpu resources. Remove the /usr/lib/sendmail.fc (frozen configuration) file while debugging addresses, mailers and the like but generate a new .fc file (sendmail -bz) once you have a stable and workable .cf file. H.
