Are there standard(s) for SIMMs?  Once you buy a motherboard,
are you committed to that manufacturer forever?

If you are talking 9-bit SIMM's as used in PC's for example, there is a
pin-out standard adhered to by the manufacturers of memory devices, however
it is just possible that an OEM might design and use their own to tie in
their customers (we don't).
