We are exploring the feasibility of upgrading our two VAX 11/780's to 782's. What I'm looking for is anyones experience in running Berkeley 4.2BSD Un*x on a 782 if possible or that it's not possible. Thank you in advance. Re: message of Daryl G Johnson You might want to contact the folks at Purdue about doing a Purdue-style upgrade to your 780. Not only is it cheaper (about $75k including FPA), but they have modified 4.2 (and 4.1) to use it. (In this upgrage, the second CPU replaces the terminator on the right end of the SBI; hence it shares access to everything on the SBI.) After some negotiation, we persuaded our local DEC maintenance office to install the second CPU and maintain the system. We have not yet used the second CPU extensively (no 4.2 license yet), but we have tested it, and it seems to work fine.

We have been using a Purdue style Dual-Vax for several months now. It is an elegant and easy, if non-standard upgrade if you have access to some competent hardware people (either in house or contract). Ours is maintained by our third party maintanence contractor. We built it ourselver for less than $70K. Makes a 780 almost tolerable, and takes up far less power, AC, and space. -Doug-
