I need to get a detailed description of the Huffman text compression algorithm. I have to get two cooperative programs working that were written a long time ago. They use Huffman coding to compress a block of text, and then read the stored data off of disk and then uncompress it into straight text. The original programs had almost zero comments, and used mostly one and two-letter variable names. If I could get a detailed description of the Huffman process, I might stand a chance of getting it to work. I would appreciate the answer on-line, but if you have to refer me to an article/book, that will suffice.
