A university overseas is considering upgrading their basic computational facilities from a Data General system. They are interested in two Sun 4/490's for that purpose. However, local IBM office gave them a good price on a system based on IBM RISC 6000's. Furthermore, they think the IBM system may also have better performance than the Sun system they are considering. They like the Suns because of wide availibility of public domain or inexpensive software. What are the general opinions on IBM RISC machines? Do they have good price/performance, are they reliable, is the software reliable, and can one expect to find inexpensive software for them? Please reply to me.
