[comp.misc] Hard Drive Questions

OK, all you hard drive experts out there! Here are a couple of questions
about hard drives for you:

1. Given: an original IBM AT, with an 11-entry drive table in ROM. How
    possible is it to tell SETUP that NO hard drives are connected, and then
    go and plug in a HD controller and a (supposedly) non-supported drive?
    Would the ROMs on the controller allow it to be used anyway?

2. What would be the consequences of hooking up, say, a 150 meg ESDI drive
    with 34 sectors/track and telling setup it is a type 9 drive?
    (Type 9 is 112 mb, 17 sectors/track)

    Would the drive operate at 112 meg, 17 s/t, or would it simply not work?

3. I'm somewhat familiar with the ROM upgrade/patch argument. In case it
    isn't obvious, I'm wondering what the chances of avoiding both are! Does
    anyone have any experience with big and/or odd HDs on such an AT?

I'd really appreciate any help anyone can give me! Thanks!

pat

        Usually to use a nonstandard drive you would have a software driver
(DiskManager). Use set the ROM to type 1, put dm.sys in your config.sys and
le the program deal with the drive. Ask whoever sold you the drive or was
using it before you.
