Does anyone have any information on DEC's microvax and Ultrix-11 (???) that
its suppose to run? I'm interested in what Ultrix-11 has in the way of
compatibility. Such as; does it support uucp? how many multi-users?
what version of Unix is it most like (4.2bsd? v7? etc..)? What would
you consider a decently configured system (memory, printer, etc...)?
the cost of such a configuration? Reliability?

Run 2.9 instead of ULTRIX-11. We would still be waiting, I think
ULTRIX-11 is out, but first they said June of this year, then this,
then that. I am under the impression that ULTRIX-11 is just 2.9, If
it is not, and is just v7m, then you will loose out in preformance
bewteen 2.9 and v7m.

Unfortunately, I don't think a VAX can run a PDP-11 operating system in
compatibility mode (and I'm not sure the MicroVAX has compatibility mode
anyway), so it can run neither 2.9BSD nor Ultrix-11. It can, however,
run 4.2BSD - which is what it does when it runs MicroUltrix or whatever
they call the MicroVAX version of Ultrix-32 which is the DEC version of
4.2BSD.

Yes, but the Microvax Handbook says that Ultrix32m is a repackaging,
not a subset of Ultrix-32. On the other hand, one must pay
extra for fortran, pascal, lisp, etc etc.

Our salesman says that by March, fortran will be included.

You can't run in kernel mode in compatibility mode. Any traps switch
you back to native mode.

The question is moot on the MicroVAX anyway, because it doesn't
support compatibility mode.

I called the DEC UNIX engineering group to try to get a copy of
their UD51/RX50 device driver with the usual null success. They
told me that ULTRIX-11 is not 2.9 in the kernel. It has some
features at the outside, like overlaying user programs. But no
overlaying in the kernel, and no autoconfiguration.
