Thanks to all those who replied to my questions about the WORDS dictionary file. To summarise: The word list I described seems to be the same as that distributed with a lot of Unix systems. It is based on Webster's New International Dictionary of the English Language, 2nd Edition, Unabridged, 1934. It seems that the original copyright has lapsed and the list is now in the public domain.
