How about using a database format for storing and arranging your records? You could number each record in order of purchase and include items like artist, type of music, title, mood, etc. in the database: 102:Beethoven:3rd Symphony:classical:rainy day: 173:Dead Boys:Dead Boys Alive!:punk:nuclear attack: Then use something like "dbselect" in UNIX and just ask for the categories you're interested in and the number(s) that qualify. It might take a while to set up initially (especially if you have 1000 albums) but once done all you need is a terminal. Come to think of it, this makes a great excuse to buy that home computer you always wanted...
