gaspar@demo1.inf.ethz.ch (Scott "gaspo" Gasparian) (03/21/91)
Hi all, I received many responses to my requests for information on contract type agreements for students who use our machines. The biggest collection that is archived at ftp.cs.widener.edu (192.55.239.132) by Brendan Kehoe (thanks Brendan!!). Also, Dave Grisham at U New Mexico has a collection (I haven't checked these yet) in unma.unm.edu /ethics with thanks to J Greely <jgreely@cis.ohio-state.edu> for pointing me there. Basically, I found that the policies come in two flavors: rules and suggestions. What I did was cull through all the different documents from the various universities, and threw a general summary together. I also stumbled across a script called "policy" that cats selected documents to the users terminal upon initial login, and records that they have seen the documents. I don't remember where I got it from, (it may have been a .sources group), but I can mail it to you if you ask real nice, or send mail to "bud" at bbh@mtek.com (thats the only name in the file). Thanks to john@iastate.edu (John Hascall) and andyb@coat.com (Andy Behrens) who both sent me their organizations policy statements. Also, "I.G.Batten" <I.G.Batten%fulcrum.bt.co.uk@axion.bt.co.uk> raised some interesting comments about the applicability of state/local/national laws to such policies and the connection of Computer Science Departement Policies with the University Policies (i.e., breaking into a students account is the same as cheating on a final, and crashing the system is the same as blowing up the registrars office (my analogies)). Once again, thanks to all, and I will forward my finished docs to Brendan as soon as they are all cleaned up and smelling like lawyers. --gaspo. BTW, my personalpinion is this is all evil. To quote a friend of mine, "Any society that needs disclaimers has to many lawyers." -E.Pepke /----------------------------------------------------------------------------\ | Scott "gaspo" Gasparian -- System Administrator | _>________ _<________ | | Dept.
