[comp.misc] Hayes escape sequence vs. FLEX

jejones@mcrware.UUCP (James Jones) (05/18/91)

The really ironic part about the infamous Hayes modem escape sequence is that
it *didn't* always avoid confusion with actual data.

Long ago, a company called TSC wrote an operating system for the 6800 called
FLEX. (Later, they did a 6809 version, and then did an at least somewhat
Unix-like OS called UniFlex, which still exists.) The prompt for the user
was, of all things, "+++".

Also long ago, there was an Oklahoma City 6809 Users Group, which had a
dialup system that, I believe, ran under FLEX, and like FLEX, the prompt
for the user was "+++". Under the right circumstances, that would appear
with appropriate timing to confuse the modem that the system used.
