My 3 year old hayes smart modem 2400S no longer recognizes the dial tone or the tone of the modem at the other end of the line. If i ask it to dial, it tells me "no dial tone". If i disable dial tone detection (atx1), then the modem dials and gets a connect tone, but then hangs forever, apparently waiting to hear a connect tone. Hayes' customer service acknowleged that it's a modem problem and graciously offered to fix it for $90., just about the price of a new 2400 baud modem. Anyone out there played around with these modems and know or can give me an educated guess about where the problem lies? i.e., what component(s) I should replace? (Alternatively, any one know of a way around the lack of recognition of the modem connect tone, that is, a way to force connection without the modem having heard the connect tone from the distal modem?) Thanks! Please reply to larry@merlin.cvs.rochester.edu, since this is probably not of wide interest. If you'd like a summary of replies, please mail me. larry snyder
