[comp.misc] BIX vs. Internet

ken@GTEtele.com (Ken Swapp) (06/18/91)

Howdy,

I am once again considering joining BIX, which is Byte magazine's conference
system. Can someone out in Netland provide any input on the value of BIX?
I have heard it tends to be more mature and involves more professionals than
college students. Other than the yearly fee for BIX versus 'free' for
students, I don't understand why this would be true.

Any opinions :) ?

Thanks.

I was a member of BIX for a year. It was OK.... The membership was
more adult than your local BBS's, so the noise/signal ratio was pretty
good. But even adults don't have *that* much to say.
After a while, I let my subscription slide. I wasn't getting much
out of it. Downloading programs over a long-distance line isn't
my idea of fun, and I prefer reading paper over the VDT any day,
so I could just wait till the next issue of Byte for the news.
All in all, it wasn't too bad.

Something that annoys me about BIX is that they don't have a gateway
to Internet or UUCP mail. CIX, a UK BIX-alike, has a gateway, making
it possible CIX and Internet users to exchange mail.

It is as if BYTE would like to make believe BIX is the only electronic
communication system in the world. This is really silly.

I imagine that BIX is mindful of this goal and will do something
about it. It only makes sense.

That's not true. The BIX/Internet gateway is DasNet. To mail from
Internet to a BIX user, just send it to user@dcibix.das.net.

HOWEVER... this will only work if the BIX user has subscribed to the
DasNet service in addition to the basic BIX service. Since it costs
extra, few BIX users take this option.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that, but in a sense you are right. They
could make email to/from BIX easier and more accessible.

Actually, there is a gateway, called "dasnet". The catch is that it's a
service that one of the parties must pay for.

To get mail to a user on BIX, try the following:

	user@dcibix.das.net

tried recently.

But BUX is in it for dollars, not cents.

I've noticed, for example, that even their Unix column NEVER
prints the author's Internet address. Rather it says "Write to X
c/o the Editors" or such.

Somehow that closed mentality reminds me of IBM's "we are God,
and we won't talk to anyone else" anti-ASCII/pro 3270 additude.

According to the latest BIX newsletter, BIX is going to FINALLY
implement an EMAIL gateway.
