[sci.space.shuttle] need information--alternative shuttle designs

Please e-mail, as I am posting this for a friend and do not usually read
this group.

I need information about shuttle designs that work like a plane rather 
than a rocket (i.e. takes off and lands on a runway, rather than a pad.)
I'd prefer current developments rather than a historical overview.  
Any suggestions on where to find material that isn't too technical would
be appreciated.
