I thought NASA has already decided to let school children name it, and that
it ought to be named after a famous research vessel. So isn't the net
discussion here academic anyway?

Partly not. Judging by the tone and content of some of the postings,
this discussion is probably feeding directly to that community!

Well since the initial posting said it should be named for a research vessel
I can think of one that seems appropriate. It belongs to a man whom we all
know and who has done a tremendous service to the world by bringing the
beauty and uniqueness of the life in the world's oceans into our living
rooms. Yah I'm talking about Jaques Yves Cousteau, and I think it would
be a good thing if we named the new shuttle the "Calypso".

P.S> And if anyone out there knows a school teacher with a bunch of kids that
are keen to try and submit a name then please give them this one.
They or anyone else is free to use this suggestion as they see fit.

You mean like The Beagle? Not exactly the sort of name i'd pick for a
shuttle, but it would show that NASA might be regaining its sense of humor.

I dont think that the name of the new shuttle should relate to the
Challenger disaster..It just strikes me as lacking a little taste. It would be
playing on the melodrama of the accident itself and not honoring the
Challenger crew.

Everybody around here who I talked to about the Idea found that's it's
a wonderful idea. I just hope this suggestion becomes official.

Perhaps we should name it the "Vanna".....after everyone's favorite TV
game show hostess. Certianly would have a lot of public support there!

Of course, calling it the "Sajak" has a certain Star Trek flavor to it.....

James Cook sailed on the "HMS Resolution", didn't he? And Axel Nordenskiold,
a Swedish explorer, sailed on the "Vega".

Not that anybody's going to take any notice of what I'm saying...

Actually..."Resolution" sounds very good..It's not too mushy or melodramatic..
it has some sensible strength to it..

  *HEH*

They could always go the Star Trek route again..Shuttle "Excelsior"....
imagine...."Shuttle V'ger, you are go for liftoff!!"
