Sarah Keegan Headquarters, Washington, D.C. August 5, 1988 RELEASE: 88-110 SPACE SHUTTLE DISCOVERY'S ENGINE VALVE TO BE REPLACED Admiral Richard H. Truly, NASA associate administrator for space flight, and his management council today decided to proceed with changing out the hydrogen bleed valve on Discovery's main engine 2 prior to the flight readiness firing (FRF). A new target date for the FRF will not be set until the changeout process gets underway. However, based on what is currently known, it appears that the FRF may occur as early as late next week. Truly indicated, "We are opting for a procedure which will give us additional confidence to move forward to the FRF. I am very pleased with the efforts of the teams who did the troubleshooting on this situation and also with those who took us through our recent countdown simulation activities."
