During the coverage of the landing of Discovery, the commentators made remarks concerning the "like new" condition of the shuttle, and even explicilty stated that there was no tile loss. However, a head-on view of the shuttle a few moments later seemed to show a whole bunch of tiles missing from the front of both OMS pods. Was this impression correct? Has the loss of these tiles become so routine as to be literally unremarkable? If so, why do they even put them on? Lew Mammel, Jr.
