KSC SPACE SHUTTLE PROCESSING REPORT - MONDAY, JANUARY 9, 1989
STS-29 - DISCOVERY (OV 103) - OPF BAY 1
STS-29 astronauts Robert Springer and James Bagian completed
the crew equipment interface test and sharp edge inspection of
the payload bay over the weekend. Testing of the orbiter's
systems power redundancy capabilities also was completed over the
weekend.
Activities continuing this week to prepare the orbiter for
transfer to the VAB include closeouts of the midbody and aft
compartment, cleaning the payload bay and thermal protection
system operations. Tests planned today are a final self test of
the Ku-band antenna and a leak check of the forward reaction
control system.
Discovery is scheduled to be transferred to the VAB on Jan.
19 where it will be mated to its solid rocket boosters and
external tank. Rollout to Launch Pad 39-B is planned for Jan. 26
and the current launch assessment date is Jan. 23.
STS-30 - ATLANTIS (0V 104) - OPF BAY 2
Technicians are removing the right hand orbital maneuvering
system (OMS) pod today and will transfer it to the maintenance
facility for repairs. The two main engines were removed last week
and transferred to the VAB main engine shop for turnaround
processing.
Damaged tiles are being removed and the first new tile since
the mission was bonded over the weekend.
STS-28 - COLUMBIA (OV 102) - OMRF
Modifications and thermal protection system operations are
continuing this week. Both OMS pods and the forward reaction
control system are being prepared for flight at a facility on
center.
STS-29 and STS-30 SOLID ROCKET BOOSTERS - VAB
Closeouts are continuing on the STS-29 stack to prepare for
the orbiter mating activity later this month.
Technicians are busy stacking segments for the STS-30
mission. The left aft center segment is hoisted above the stack
and adhesive is being applied in preparation for the mate.
At the RPSF, the left forward center segment is ready for
transfer to the VAB and the right aft booster nozzle was
installed.
