KSC SPACE SHUTTLE PROCESSING REPORT - FRIDAY, FEB. 24, 1989

                     STS-29 - DISCOVERY (OV 103) - PAD 39-B

Workers have completed installing heat shields around two of
the three main engines. Technicians are finishing the last
connections of the third oxidizer turbo pump while installing
          heat shields around that engine.

Preparations for the helium signature leak test of the main
propulsion system are underway. The test is scheduled to begin
tonight and will extend through tomorrow. Pre-launch operations
scheduled for Sunday include pressurizing the orbital maneuvering
system and reaction control system tanks for flight, installing
part of the ordnance devices and loading the power reactant
storage and distribution (PRSD) system dewars on the Fixed
Service Structure. The orbiter's PRSD tanks are loaded from these
          dewars during the launch countdown.

A flight readiness test will be conducted to cycle the main
engine valves next week. Preparations for launch including
closeout of the aft compartment are scheduled to begin next week.

Software was loaded into the Inertial Upper Stage's general
purpose computers and azimuth determination of the redundant
inertial measurment units was completed. A flight readiness check
of the IUS systems started last night and will continue through
          the day.

The STS-29 launch date will be set at the conclusion of the
Flight Readiness Review, scheduled for March 2 and 3 at KSC.

                     STS-30 - ATLANTIS (0V 104) - OPF BAY 2

A test of the orbiter's flight controls has been completed.
Activities continuing include checkout of the main propulsion
system, closeouts of the midbody, tile inspections and
waterproofing. Orbiter structural leak checks are planned this
          weekend.

                     STS-28 - COLUMBIA (OV 102) - OPF BAY 1

Checkout of the main propulsion system is continuing today.
Technicians began installing the power reactant storage and
distibution system tanks yesterday. The galley is scheduled to be
installed tomorrow. Return-to-flight modifications are underway.
At the OMS RCS Processing Area (OPRA), formerly known as the
Hypergolic Maintenance Facility, work is proceeding to ready the
orbital maneuvering system pods and the reaction control system
          for Columbia's flight.

STS-30 SOLID ROCKET BOOSTERS - VAB

Closeouts of the STS-30 booster field joints are underway
today. The external tank is scheduled to be mated to the boosters
          Monday evening.

The left aft booster for Mission STS-28 arrived at the
Rotation Processing and Storage Facility on Tuesday and buildup
          operations are underway.

Here's another for Eugene's list of most frequently asked questions,
forgive me for asking it but, I'm having troubles sleeping at night wondering,
what is a helium signature leak test?
