MISSION STATUS REPORT #17 FLIGHT DAY FIVE Friday, March 17, 1989 -- 6:00 am CST Early morning crew activities included preparation for tomorrow's landing at Edwards Air Force Base with checkouts of the Orbiter's flight control surfaces and reaction control system used during reentry. Consistent with normal operations for Space Shuttle missions, the crew will wrap up operations on all onboard experiments and stow any equipment used during the mission. In addition to cabin stow procedures and onboard system checks, Discovery's crew members plan to continue Earth observation photography using payload bay, handheld and IMAX cameras. Also today, a maneuver of the Orbiter to assist a final run of the Space Station Heatpipe Advanced Radiator Element or SHARE is planned this morning. The crew will document the double rotation of the vehicle using IMAX and also power on the accelerometer on the CHROMEX plant cell division experiment in order to get an accurate rate of acceleration during the manuever. If SHARE does not respond following the maneuver, the crew will terminate the experiment and conduct an additional run of the water dump detailed test objective and AMOS experiments performed yesterday. The next status report will be at about 9:30 am CST.
