[sci.space.shuttle] Shuttle Summary--First 25 missions

slr@skep2.ATT.COM (Shelley.L.Rosenbaum.[ho95c]) (03/31/89)

A few weeks ago I asked whether anyone was interested in getting
a summary of the past shuttle missions. I received a few responses,
and so am posting the summaries for the first six missions. Unless
I receive negative reaction from this, I'll continue to post for
the other (pre-51L) missions.

BTW, I got the info from _Space Shuttle Log, The First 25 Flights_,
by Gene Gurney and Jeff Forte. I'd recommend the book to all--lots
of details in it.

STS-1: Columbia
Launched 4/28/81 7:00 a.m. EST KSC
Landed 4/14/81 10:21 a.m. PST Edwards AFB
John Young (CDR), Robert Crippen (PLT)

Tested major shuttle systems.

STS-2: Columbia
Launched 11/12/81 10:10 a.m. EST KSC
Landed 11/14/81 1:23 p.m. Edwards AFB
Joseph Engle (CDR), Richard Truly (PLT)

Remote Manipulator System tested; also, earth-looking
experiments in payload bay. One fuel cell failed, cutting
short mission by 3 days.

STS-3: Columbia
Launched 3/22/82 11:00 a.m. EST KSC
Landed 3/30/82 9:05 a.m. MST Northrop Strip, White Sands, NM
Jack Lousma (CDR), Charles Fullerton (PLT)

Continued testing of space shuttle systems and RMS; measurement
of thermal response of orbiter; nine science experiments
performed, plus electrophoresis, heflex bioengineering, mono-
disperse latex reactor, induced environment contamination, and
one student experiment.

STS-4: Columbia
Launched 6/27/82 11:00 a.m. EDT KSC
Landed 7/4/82 9:09 a.m. PDT Edwards AFB
Thomas Mattingly (CDR), Henry Hartsfield (PLT)

First Getaway Special, DoD, and commercial (continuous flow
electrophoresis system) experiments flown; performed medical
experiments; took photos of lightning activity. Both SRBs
lost when they hit ocean.

STS-5: Columbia
Launched 11/11/82 7:19 a.m. EST KSC
Landed 11/16/82 6:33 a.m. PST Edwards AFB
Vance Brand (CDR), Robert Overmyer (PLT), Dr. Joseph Allen (MS1),
Dr. William Lenoir (MS2)

Deployed 2 commercial SatComs (Anik C-3--Telesat Canada;
SBS-3--Satellite Business Systems); three student experiments
and flight data instrumentation packages flown; spacewalk
cancelled due to spacesuit malfunctions.

STS-6: Challenger
Launched 4/4/83 1:30 p.m. EST KSC
Landed 4/9/83 10:53 a.m. PST Edwards AFB
Paul Weitz (CDR), Karol Bobko (PLT), Donald Peterson (MS1),
Dr. Story Musgrave (MS2)

First TDRS deployed (IUS malfunctioned, but satellite placed
in stable orbit); spacewalk (Peterson, Musgrave); first use
of lightweight ET and SRB casings.

			Including the time-travel system? :-)
