KSC SPACE SHUTTLE PROCESSING REPORT FOR - TUESDAY, JUNE 6, 1989
STS-28 - COLUMBIA (OV 102) - OPF BAY 1
A redundancy test of the orbiter's systems is continuing
today. Heat shields are scheduled to be removed from around main
engine number 1. During the helium signature leak test of the
main engines last week, a leak in the engine one high pressure
liquid hydrogen turbo pump was revealed. Engineers are
troublehooting the problem and are preparing to remove and
replace the pump. A spare pump is already on hand and ready for
installation.
The landing gears are being checked out for flight this week
with pressurization of the struts planned today. Technicians are
rigging the landing gear doors for a tight fit and smooth
closure. Thermal protection system operations are continuing.
Columbia's is target date for tow to the Vehicle Assembly
Building for mating with its external tank and solid rocket
boosters is June 23.
STS-30 - ATLANTIS (OV 104) - OPF BAY 2
Technicians completed hypergolic propellant offloading
operations this past weekend. Preparations are underway this
week to remove the right orbital maneuvering system pod this
weekend. The pod will be transferred to the maintenance facility
for repairs. Checkouts of the power reactant storage and
distribution system are continuing.
STS-33 - DISCOVERY (OV 103) - OMRF
Power down work scheduled today includes modification of the
crew seats to allow more room for the crew when they wear the
partial pressure suits. Discovery will be transferred to bay 1
when Columbia is moved to the VAB in June.
STS-28 SOLID ROCKET BOOSTERS - VAB
Closeouts of the boosters and tank are underway. Workers are
scheduled to install pyrotechnic devices today.
STS-34 SOLID ROCKET BOOSTERS - RPSF
Technicians are continuing to process the solid rocket motor
segments in the Rotation Processing and Surge Facility. Stacking
is scheduled to begin in mid-June.
