KSC SPACE SHUTTLE PROCESSING REPORT - FRIDAY, JULY 28, 1989 STS-28 - COLUMBIA (OV 102) - LAUNCH PAD 39-B Technicians at Launch Pad 39-B are continuing the welding operation to replace two valves in the aft compartment for the main propulsion system helium system. A new line was brazed in earlier this week and a filter was replaced. A new helium regulator will be installed after the welding activities are completed. These components are being replaced because of contamination found in the system several weeks ago. An engine frequency response test is planned for Monday to cycle valves and check out acutators. Tomorrow, technicians are scheduled to install some of the ordnance devices, load the power reactant storage and distribution system tanks on the Fixed Service Structure with liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen, and pressurize the orbiter's onboard hypergolic propellant storage tanks for flight. Launch countdown preparations will begin next week. Launch of Columbia and mission STS-28 is scheduled for August 8 with a launch period of 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. eastern time. STS-34 - ATLANTIS (OV 104) - OPF BAY 2 The left orbital maneuvering system pod is being installed and checkout is planned next week. Checkout of the water spray boilers and waste containment system are continuing this week. A helium signature test of the main engines is planned next week. STS-33 - DISCOVERY (OV 103) - OPF BAY 1 Power up operations and systems testing are planned today. A voltage test of the fuel cells was completed. A functional check of the forward reaction control system is continuing. Modifications and tile work are underway. Testing of the Ku-band antenna is planned next week. STS-34 SOLID ROCKET BOOSTERS - VAB/RPSF Joint closeouts are active on all booster field joints. Mating of the external tank to the boosters is scheduled for this weekend.
