KSC SPACE SHUTTLE PROCESSING REPORT - WEDNESDAY, AUG. 2, 1989
STS-28 - COLUMBIA (OV 102) - LAUNCH PAD 39-B
Yesterday, the engine frequency response test (FRT) began at
about 1 p.m. and was completed by late yesterday. During this
test, engine valves were cycled and actuators were checked out.
The orbiter's aerosurfaces were cycled this morning and
preparations are underway to perform leak checks of seals around
the engine valves.
Later today, checks of the range safety system will be
conducted. Retest of the liquid hydrogen external tank actuator,
which separates the tank from the orbiter in flight, is scheduled
for tonight. Retest of that particular actuator requires the use
of the master events controller (MEC) which is responsible for
sending the separation command in flight. The pad will be closed
tonight while technicians disconnect ordnance devices to allow
retest of the actuator through the MEC. After the retest,
ordnance devices will be reconnected and final ordnance
operations are scheduled for tomorrow.
Sniff checks of the orbital maneuvering system fuel motor
valves were completed yesterday. (Yesterday's status incorrectly
refered to orbital maneuvering system pod motor valves as liquid
oxygen and hydrogen. They are hypergolic and fuel valves.)
Launch countdown preparations are underway this week. The
mobile launcher platform was washed down yesterday. Today, the
flame trench and pad surface are scheduled to be washed down. The
countdown is scheduled to begin at 12:01 a.m. eastern time
Saturday morning and the STS-28 flight crew members will be
arriving at KSC's Shuttle Landing Facility at about 4 p.m. that
afternoon. Launch of Columbia on mission STS-28 is scheduled for
August 8 with a launch period of 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. eastern
time.
STS-34 - ATLANTIS (OV 104) - OPF BAY 2
Preparations for the helium signature leak test of the main
engines are underway today. An electrical redundancy test of the
OMS and FRCS is scheduled this week. Thermal blankets are being
installed on the aft bulkhead and on the cooling lines for the
radioisotope thermoelectric generators.
STS-33 - DISCOVERY (OV 103) - OPF BAY 1
Power up operations and systems testing are planned today.
Filling and bleeding of the hydraulic system are underway.
Modifications and tile work are underway. Testing of the Ku-band
antenna is underway this week.
STS-34 SOLID ROCKET BOOSTERS/EXTERNAL TANK - VAB
Technicians are making electrical connections between the
boosters and tank.
STS-33 SOLID ROCKET BOOSTERS - RPSF
Buildup of the left and right aft boosters for the STS-33
mission is continuing at the Rotation Processing and Surge
Facility. Stacking is scheduled to begin later this month.
