KSC SPACE SHUTTLE PROCESSING REPORT - THURSDAY, AUG. 17, 1989 STS-28 - COLUMBIA (OV 102) - DFRF Turnaround activities are continuing on schedule at Dryden Flight Research Facility for returning the Columbia to KSC this weekend. Hypergolic propellants were offloaded yesterday and preparations are underway to install the aerodynamic tail cone over the three main engines. Columbia will be bolted on top of the 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft tomorrow. Pending the completion of planned work and favorable weather, the cross-country ferry flight will begin on Saturday morning. A refueling stop is planned at Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita Falls, Texas. A one-day ferry flight is desirable pending favorable weather. STS-34 - ATLANTIS (OV 104) - OPF BAY 2 A functional test of the landing gear is planned for tonight. Hydraulic operations will continue tomorrow with positioning the orbiter's aerosurfaces for the roll over. The gaseous oxgyen lines in engine 2027 are being inspected for a few micron size particles that could have come from some ground support equipment during testing. A tile was bonded on the right hand nose landing gear door yesterday. Step and gap measurements are being made and gap fillers are being installed. This morning, 9 tile cavities were reported. Schedulers are targeting to move Atlantis to the Vehicle Assembly Building early in the morning on Sunday, August 20. A specific time will be determined as work progresses. Atlantis is scheduled to be in the VAB about eight days before being transferred to Launch Pad 39-B. While in the VAB, Atlantis will be bolted to its solid rocket boosters and external tank. STS-33 - DISCOVERY (OV 103) - OPF BAY 1 Power up operations and systems testing are planned today. Modifications and tile work are underway. Operations scheduled this week include testing of the waste containment system and the Ku-band antenna system. Three of the four main landing gear tires were installed. Two of the three main engines are scheduled to be installed tomorrow and Saturday. The right orbital maneuvering system pod is scheduled to be installed next week. STS-34 SOLID ROCKET BOOSTERS/EXTERNAL TANK - VAB Closeouts of the STS-34 external tank and solid rocket boosters are underway this week. Cable tray covers are being closed out for flight. Orbiter mate preparations have begun. STS-33 SOLID ROCKET BOOSTERS - VAB The left aft center segment was transferred to the VAB early this morning and is being prepared for mating. Booster stacking operations will continue on a non-interference basis with the STS-34 orbiter mating activities.

Columbia will be bolted on top of the 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft tonight. Pending the completion of planned work and favorable weather, the cross-country ferry flight will begin early Saturday morning. A refueling stop is planned at Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita Falls, Texas. A one-day ferry flight is planned, pending favorable weather, putting Columbia's arrival back at KSC tomorrow evening before sunset. STS-34 - ATLANTIS (OV 104) - OPF BAY 2 Rollover preparations are underway today. A functional test of the landing gear is underway after which the landing gear doors will be cycled for tile fit checks. The orbiter's aerosurfaces have been positioned for the rollover. The gaseous oxgyen lines in engine 2027 are being inspected for a few micron size particles that could have come from some ground support equipment during testing. Six tiles are scheduled to be bonded today. Step and gap measurements are being made and gap fillers are being installed. This morning, 9 tile cavities were reported. Schedulers are targeting to move Atlantis to the Vehicle Assembly Building at midnight Saturday. Atlantis is scheduled to be in the VAB about eight days before being transferred to Launch Pad 39-B. Modifications and tile work are underway. The waste containment system has been installed. Preparations are underway to install engine 2107 in the number three position today. The second engine will be installed in the number one position tomorrow. The third main engine is scheduled to arrive the last week of the month. The right orbital maneuvering system pod is scheduled to be installed next week. STS-34 SOLID ROCKET BOOSTERS/EXTERNAL TANK - VAB Preparations to mate the orbiter to the external tank are scheduled today. Platforms around the tank and boosters will be retracted tomorrow afternoon in preparation for the mate. Atlantis will be hardmated to the stack about 27 hours after it arrives in the transfer aisle. STS-33 SOLID ROCKET BOOSTERS - VAB The left aft center segment is scheduled to be lifted for inspections today and mated by tomorrow evening. Booster stacking operations will continue on a non-interference basis with the STS-34 orbiter mating activities.
